How To Increase Computing Efficiency With Hosted Virtual Desktops

By Mamie Conrad

Virtualization as a concept in computing that has introduced a whole new range of possibilities. Generally with such a concept it is possible to run applications that require a lot of memory and processing power on thin client. This is accomplished when the client accesses instances of the application running on a powerful server. In this way it appears as though the application was actually running locally. This adaptation is typical of the hosted virtual desktops that operate on this concept.

This implementation also known as client virtualization is enabled when a desktop environment on the personal computer is uploaded onto a remote server away from the physical machine. The arrangement here is the typical client server model and is accomplished using the virtual desktop interface (VDI). In this way powerful operations can for example run on smart phones or any other thin client oblivious of the server processing in the background.

In this way processes that may require more memory and higher processing power can be carried out on a thin client. Therefore the smart phone will be running the application as though it was local whereas it is remote. This makes use of the server operating system environment.

Various environments can be exported to the server and each of them is available to its user. In this kind of arrangement different users can access their own instances from the server. Therefore these users can each run their own personalized sessions concurrently. Generally the process is transparent to the user and in fact they presume that they are running their applications locally.

An obvious benefit from such a concept is in remote administration capabilities. Therefore different administrators can create and upload personalized VDI instances. They will have access to them at any one time and carry on their designated tasks without noticing that everything is running remotely. The environment is such that the controlling and duplicate machines have similar set up.

This concept in computing has several benefits. Circumstances where user demand is such that more than one desktop environment is required simultaneously can be implemented using this approach. When this environment is server based it becomes possible for different users to access the same instance of the environment. In this way shared processing can be accomplished easily.

Generally the remote access process is a secured activity. As such data integrity is maintained and even enhanced when this technique is implemented. Other benefits like longer refresh cycles are viable with this technique. This enables an environment where the users logged on to the server cannot notice any lapses in their processing even when they are many who are logged on the server at the same time.

Generally the implementation of the VDI can be accomplished in a number of ways. This includes the centralized and hosted approaches where the application runs completely on the server. It may also be necessary to implement remote synchronization where a client makes a copy of the VDI instance on to the local machine. Ultimately with such a growing need for virtualization implementing hosted virtual desktops is a viable option.
